Most of you are probably familiar with our comparison to sheep. Well, before I go farther on this let me give you a run down on what the average sheep is like:
Sheep are probably one of the dumbest animals on earth. They follow either the ram or the shepherd, even if they go right over the edge of a cliff. They need people to watch out for them otherwise we would be out of lamb chops. No, sheep have never been very bright. It's amazing they can even raise their own young. They even need their shepherd to show them where to eat. If it were left to them to decide, they would eat anything in close proximity, including poisonous plants. So why in the world are we compared to sheep?
Because, ladies and gentlemen, believe it or not, we are just like them. We are not the brightest bulbs on the porch. Think about it. Most of us need something or some one to follow. If we don't have that something or some one, our lives disintegrate into nothing. We need care and love. We need some one to show us the best places to go and the best paths to walk on. We need some one to show us what is good to eat or do and what is not.
That's why God compares us to sheep, and himself to the good shepherd. Because there is no greater shepherd to be found. He is the one who shows us the best places to go, the best food to eat, and the best path to take. He leads us so we won't follow an impostor off the cliff.
You know one thing sheep have going for them? They follow only the shepherd's voice and feet. See, when sheep walk all they can see in front of them is feet, whether it's the shepherd's feet or other sheep's feet. They also hear the shepherd's voice. They will never follow a stranger's voice or a stranger's feet. We should be like that. We should follow God's voice and God's voice alone.
We are like sheep, and God is our Good Shepherd. With Him leading the way, none of us can fail.
"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
"Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
